Ethically Sourced crystals: Your choice matters
More likely than not, that shiny crystal you use as a centerpiece in your living room has been mined under unethical and unsustainable conditions. Mine exploration and operation often results in deforestation, erosion, contamination of our waterways, soil profile destruction and increased gas emissions. Not surprisingly, these conditions are not limited to just your crystal decor. Minerals are used in skincare, tech, construction, and in nearly every aspect of our society including the phone you are using right now to read this blog post. It’s inescapable.
So, you might be asking why I am a crystal shop owner complaining about mining? GREAT QUESTION!
As a geologist I know too well how intrinsically tied we are to mineral mining. The only way forward is to hold mining companies accountable by supporting those who share our core values of sustainability. So what do I really mean by “sustainable”?
Sustainable mining is when we conduct essential resource extraction while improving social, economic and environmental outcomes.
Here are 3 major questions you should be asking when purchasing your next crystal:
What technology is used in the process of mining this crystal to reduce both energy and waste?
What conservation efforts are put in place by the mine to minimize the change in land-use?
Were the workers who extracted this crystal working under safe labour conditions and paid adequately (fair trade)?
You might think this is crazy to ask from somebody you want to buy a crystal from, but applying pressure to sellers and letting them know that you care about the journey of the crystal is the only way a shift to more sustainable mining will take place.
YOUR CHOICES MATTER.
XO,
Holly
